Apple has patented a new type of projector that allows viewers to enjoy 3D images without the need for cumbersome glasses.
The technology will display “auto-steroscopic” images, which simply means that the images can be viewed in 3D with human eyes alone and no further apparatus.
Apple’s latest creation, simply named on the patent as “three-dimensional display system”, aims to offer "highly effective, practical, efficient, uncomplicated, and inexpensive autostereoscopic 3D displays that allow the observer complete and unencumbered freedom of movement."
More and more 3D cinema releases and TV services have been rolled out this year and this new invention would appear to mark the next logical step for the technology.
Some companies, such as Nintendo and Cowon, have already experimented with glasses-free 3D displays, although this has been mainly limited to smaller handheld devices.
