The BBC is planning to launch a global subscriber-based iPlayer application for the iPad during the first half of 2011.
According to the BBC, the app will be based on a subscription based model and will allow the whole world to access and watch popular shows like Top Gear and Dr Who. To begin with however, only the US will be able to access it.
According to TechRadar, BBC.com managing director Luke Bradley-Jones said that although the app will cost a fee to use in most cases, there will be free area of the app that will be supported by advertisments.
Bradley Jones said at the Digital TV Summit: “I can announce here that we're going to be adopting a pure paid subscription model for the global iPlayer for launch – in part to get audiences used to using the service, but more importantly so we can generate additional value from the service in terms of the user data that it gives us”.
