CRM software maker Salesforce has announced the launch of its cloud-based database platform, sent to enter into direct competition with Oracle and Microsoft.
According to Salesforce, Database.com will allow customers to develop social centric, cloud-based and mobile applications using the platform.
One of the main advantages highlighted by Salesforce is that developers will be able to make applications any language and run them on multiple platforms, including the company's own Force.com, Microsoft's Azure platform, Google AppEngine and Amazon's EC2.
According to PC Mag, the applications developed on Database.com will be able to run on multiple devices, including Android OS powered smartphones, iPhone and iPad.
The platform is being touted for supporting highly scalable applications and security, offering SSL, identity confirmation and single sing-on capabilities.
Although similar to Force.com, Database.com is both a database and an application development platform. Force.com merely allows users to create applications.
