After fighting the mighty forces of Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and Amazon with online-based DDoS attacks, Anonymous have changed their methods slightly.
In what has been described by experts as the “first fax DDoS attack”, the hacktivists have targeted the humble fax machine, turning it into a weapon against their enemies.
The members of the group, as part of their new operation Mission: Leakflood, have been encouraged to spam fax messages to Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Moneybookers, Amazon and Tableu Software. The messages contain leaked WikiLeaks cables and pictures of Guy Fawkes, an image often associated with the Group.
Paul Mutton of Netcraft commented: "This latest campaign by the Anonymous group is analogous to the distributed denial of service attacks it has been carrying out against websites over the past week. In essence, this has turned into a DDoS attack against fax machines."
Sean-Paul Correll of Panda Labs also remarked: "It is the first fax DDoS I have ever seen."
According to The Register, Anonymous previously used “fax-flooding” before when they attacked The Church of Scientology.
