Facebook chat comes to Android

Popular social networking site Facebook has updated its Android application, to bring Facebook chat and notification messages to mobile devices running the Google OS.

Facebook Android app version 1.5.0 now allows for instant messages back and forth between 'friends' from a mobile phone or tablet - for the first time on Android devices. The Facebook chat aspect to the update also works whilst the app is no longer being displayed, just as long as the person remains logged in.

The other significant update is to push notification messages, where happenings inside of Facebook relating to posts, updates and also messages appear in the notification area on an Android device - in much the same way as text messages, tweets and emails currently do.

In the past, notifications that normally appear on the browser version of Facebook would not appear outside of the mobile’s app. Android users were only made aware of notifications, or comments being made from inside of the running application.

Unfortunately, the push notification function is only supported by Android 'Froyo' 2.2 along with later updates to the Google mobile OS.

These features now bring the Android application in par with the iPhone app, where users running the iOS version have been able to instantly message from inside of Facebook since January this year.
