Sony has finally chosen to release a PlayStation application for Android and rival platform iPhone, a move that sees Sony embrace one of its staunchest rivals.
Emmanuel Orssaud, PlayStation product manager at Sony, wrote on a blog post saying that the app will be a PlayStation Network companion one which allows uses to "monitor their trophies, see who is playing online, receive PlayStation news and more".
Scheduled to be launched at the beginning of 2011, it will arrive first in Western Europe before being rolled out elsewhere.
Strangely enough, Sony mentions the iPod Touch and the iPhone as supported platforms but not the iPad. Ditto for Windows Phone 7 which won't be supported at launch.
Future versions of the app will include more languages and the ability for players to add comments via the app to the PlayStation blog.
