Music, movies and games retailer HMV is to planning to enter the online video games trade-in market according to reports.
According to MCV, the retailer is planning to come up with an online service similar to the one recently introduced by Amazon's UK arm last week, which allows users sell and purchase used video games online.
HMV Re/Play games manager Martin Baxter said to MCV that: “Amazon’s move comes as no surprise given that some of the major players do not offer an online trade-in service. Although there are games swap websites and the likes of eBay who offer this type of service. But their prices can vary dramatically, making it difficult to understand the value of the offer.”
The views on the success of such a business model are divided however. ShopTo marketing manager Phil Driver claims, “Online trade-ins will always have issues and delays involved, which many consumers will find intolerable when compared to store trade-ins”.
