Amazon has patented a new web technology that would allow customers to return unwanted gifts even before they are delivered to them.
The patent documents viewed by The Washington Post showed the technology will allow recipients to approve the gift before it gets delivered to them.
By doing so, customers will be able to avoid the cost and the delays that accompany returning gifts which they don't like.
The new Amazon technology will not only allow customers to return the gift but also convert the undesirable gift into something that they actually like.
Another function will allow users to register their preferences and allergies so people know what to gift.
“For example, the user may specify such a rule because the user believes that this potential sender has different tastes than the user,” the patent read.
Analysts believe that the technology comes as a boon for the e-retail sector as a lot of time and money is wasted on returning gifts. A recent study had revealed that around one-third of the presents got online are returned.
