Social networking platform Facebook was the most searched item on the internet in 2010, new data released by web metrics firm Experian Hitwise reveals.
According to the company, for the second year in a row, Facebook snatched the title of the most searched item in the US, accounting for 2.11 per cent of all searches made.
Interestingly, in the list of top ten most searched items in 2010, there were four variations of Facebook: Facebook, Facebook login, Facebook.com and www.facebook.com, accounting for 3.48 per cent of total searches.
Zuckerberg's brainchild has also dethroned search engine giant Google as the most visited website in the US for 2010, accounting for 8.93 per cent of visits in the country between January 2010 to November 2010.
"When combined, common search terms - e.g., facebook and facebook.com - for Facebook accounted for 3.48 percent of all searches in the US among the top 50 terms, which represents a 207 percent increase versus 2009" Hitwise noted.
On the other hand, the fact that people actually used Google to search for Facebook highlights the importance of the search engine.
