CPTN Holdings, the Microsoft-led consortium that includes Apple, EMC and Oracle, has withdrawn its application to acquire nearly half a billion dollars' worth of Novell patents.
Back in December, CPTN Holdings was planning to acquire $442 million worth of patents from Novell as a part of its acquisition deal with Attachmate, AppleInsider reports.
The news had sent ripples through the open source community, leading the Open Source Initiative (OSI) to file a complaint with the German Federal Cartel Office against the proposed patent deal, which involves 882 Novell patents.
CPTN Holdings' decision to withdraw its application is not a result of the complaint, but is instead a strategic move.
A Microsoft representative told TechFlash: “This is a purely procedural step necessary to provide time to allow for review of the proposed transaction.”
Experts believe that the consortium's move has something to do with Attachmate postponing the acquisition due to a lack of funds and expect the deal to be back on when everything is settled.
