The top 300 free apps in the US managed to attract 3 million daily downloads on average during December 2010, according to new data from app analytics firm Distimo.
Paid apps attracted a comparatively small 350,000 downloads per day, although it was found that downloads had increased by 30 per cent compared with June. This was in part due to mobile apps falling in price over the past year.
“Comparing June data to that of December in the United States, we see that the share of revenue generated by in-app purchases from the most grossing free applications more than doubled for both the iPhone and iPad. At the same time, it becomes clear that the share of revenue generated by in-app purchases from free applications is much smaller on iPad (15 per cent) compared to iPhone (34 per cent),” Distimo said.
According to the analytics company, Angry Birds was the most popular gaming app of the year, having appeared in the top lists of each of the different app stores.
It was also found that Apple App Store users have started to download more business focused applications, suggesting that the iPhone is increasingly being seen as a work tool.
