RapidShare, the world's largest online file sharing platform, has threatened to sue MarkMonitor over a recently released report, in which the research firm names RapidShare as one of the biggest sources of digital piracy.
The company refuted the claims made in the report, and insisted that millions of RapidShare members used the platform for legitimate purposes.
Dismissing the report as "absurd", RapidShare said that it had a right to take legal action against MarkMonitor for damaging its reputation.
“Private customers use RapidShare to share their personal pictures, videos and documents or to make backup copies of their hard drives. Business clients rely on our services to exchange large files with colleagues at different sites,” the company said.
MarkMonitor acknowledged the point, but said that it will continue to stand by its findings.
The report in question had claimed that RapidShare, along with Megavideo and Megaupload, were the largest sources of digital piracy in terms of page views.
