Nintendo's Wii Fit game led to a Yorkshire woman to discover that she had developed Parkinson's disease after she found she was unable to balance properly while playing.
Julie Wilks, a former technician at a laboratory in Leeds, discovered while playing a balancing game using the Wii Fit balance board that she was leaning more on her left foot than her right.
Wilks later noticed other symptoms that fit with the degenerative disease. She then consulted a neurologist who diagnosed her with Parkinson's.
Ms. Wilks said in a statement to The Yorkshire Post: “When it came to stepping onto the balance game it was showing on the screen that I was leaning on my left foot more heavily than the other.”
“It's quite amazing that a computer game was able to point out there was a problem,” she said.
Following the revelatory diagnosis, Wilks has set up the website 'Give A Little Sunshine' in order to help others cope with the disease.
