Apple seeds iOS4.3 beta 2 and SDK to developers

Apple has distributed a second beta of the forthcoming iOS 4.3 mobile operating system as well as an updated software development kit (SDK) to registered App builders.

While that may be good news for coders who are part of Apple's £99 a year developer programme, the release notes contain some bad news for iDevice owners who were looking forward to using Apple's new and much-trumpeted multi-finger gestures which were expected to be part of the public release.

Apple has said that the four- and five-finger gestures, which were due to allow pinch for home, swipe sideways between apps and swipe up for access to the multitasking dock functions among others will not be available to the great unwashed.

"This feature will not be enabled in iOS 4.3 for customers, but we are providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps," the release notes reveal. "Developers are encouraged to evaluate any existing interactions in their applications for potential sources of interference," the document notes.

You can see what you might have been doing with some five-fingered action in the video below on an iPad, but quite how this would have worked for the fat-fingered among us on the iPhone's smaller screen is a bit if a mystery.

Perhaps that's why Apple has canned the function for now.
