Lenovo has created a new business unit to focus specifically on developing tablet and smartphone devices.
The company said that the new Mobile Internet and Digital Home Business Group will also develop cloud computing services and create applications for Lenovo devices and smart TV services.
Lenovo, which already offers the LePad tablet device and LePhone smartphone in China, isn't yet planning to introduce any new products into the Western markets, having decided to focus on growth in the Chinese market first.
The company said that Liu Jun, the former vice president of its product group, will head the new division from its Beijing offices, while Peter Hortensius, who previously managed Lenovo's Think group, will be responsible for product development in the newly formed group.
Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said in a statement: “The Mobile Internet and Digital Home Business Group will help us leverage our leadership in the PC arena to create a rich portfolio of Internet-centric devices.”
