The Guardian has released a new app for Apple's iOS platform in the US and UK, bringing with it a host of new features.
The new app, Guardian for iPhone 2.0, will be offered in the US as a subscription free download, supported entirely by advertisements, but the UK version of the app will be offered on a subscription-based model. UK users will have to pay £2.99 for 6 months or £3.99 for 12 months to view content on the app.
The newspaper said that it takes a considerable investment to ensure the availability of new content for the app, and so a subscription-based model is required to keep things going.
“While we remain committed to offering our content for free on guardian.co.uk and our recently upgraded mobile website, it's clear that in order to deliver the highest quality product for a single platform, considerable investment is required,” the paper said in a blog post.
New features include faster updates for live news and sports blog without the need to refresh regularly, new award winning video content, a new homepage design and support for landscape mode.
