Microsoft has outed Yahoo Mail as the culprit behind the “phantom” data leaks on its Windows Phone 7 platform.
In early January, users had complained to Microsoft of a glitch which made their phones send and receive data without their knowledge or consent. Last week the software giant confirmed that a third party service was behind the flaw, but refused to name the culprit.
Only in a statement last night did Microsoft name Yahoo Mail as the cause of the glitch, Windows Phone Secrets reports.
"We have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronisation of e-mail between the Windows Phone mail client and Yahoo Mail," the software giant said in the statement.
"This inefficiency can result in larger than expected data usage for a very small percentage of users."
Microsoft said it is working together with Yahoo to come up with a fix, set to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
