Verizon is likely to sell more than one million iPhone 4 smartphones as both the mobile phone operator and Apple have started to take orders for the handset on their respective websites.
The phone had been on preorder for existing customers last week and Verizon revealed that all its allocated stock vanished within two hours, making the iPhone 4 its fastest selling handset ever.
The iPhone 4 will be available in high street Verizon stores from February 10th and one analyst, Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets, expects more than one million iPhone 4 to be sold on Verizon during the first week.
Other than Verizon and Apple, Best Buy and Walmart will also sell the handset which prompts Abramsky to estimate the number of activations for the new Verizon iPhone between three and four million for the quarter.
For the whole of 2011, the analysts believes that up to 10 million iPhone 4 on Verizon will be sold with the proportion of smartphone users amongst Verizon's customer base switching to the iPhone 4 growing from 26 per cent to 40 per cent in 2011.
This means that the iPhone is likely to surpass Android as the biggest smartphone platform on the Verizon network in 2011.
