Wikileaks Opens Online Store, Looks For Revenue Stream

"Wikileaks is looking to generate more revenue by launching an online shop that is run by Spreadshirt AG. Supporters of Julian Assange and the Wikileaks cause will be able to buy a variety of products like shirts, messenger bags, hats, buttons, scarves etc."

The online store (opens in new tab), which sells Wikileaks-branded material across 16 different sub-stores, shows that all the proceedings go to Wikileaks operations without giving more details about whether this means the actual profit or the cost of purchase.

Amongst some of the more interesting designs, Free Julian in a "Che Guevara-esque" stand, a toddler T-Shirt with Wikileaks Logo, one stamped with the words "the truth is not treason" and a very powerful statement by none other than the US Supreme Court saying "Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose corruption in government." stand out.

There's also a 17 per cent off code (17OFF) for purchases totalling $35 or more which might help pay towards the rather expensive shipping, taxes and brokerage fees.

Wikileaks and its infamous editor, Julian Assange, rose to notoriety last year when the site leaked more than a quarter million confidential US diplomatic cables which shook governments globally by their content.

The site is also credited with providing the spark for the current wind of change that's sweeping Arab countries and is threatening to bring down the world's longest serving dictator.

Back in December, Paypal froze Wikileaks account citing policy violation with many blaming the US government for fomenting the move and causing hackers to target the payment site in Operation Payback.

Donations can still be made (opens in new tab) through the website of Wikileaks' lawyer, by direct bank transfer or postal mail.

As for Julian Assange, he already has two book deals in the pipeline which will help him cover his legal costs after Sweden requested his extradition over allegations of rape and sexual molestation of two women.
