A bloke appears to have sent some $200,000 to an Internet scam artist posing as his online girlfriend, according to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times.
The 48-year old from Illinois was told this week that the woman to whom he is thought to have send thousands of dollars over the past couple of years didn't exist.
The poor chap had called police believing his online girlfriend had been kidnapped in London. He described how he'd sent about $200,000 to various bank accounts in countries including Nigeria, Malaysia, Britain and the United States over the past two and-a-half years.
But police were able to confirm that the ID card she'd used was simply a sample driver’s licence issued in Florida.
Police said the man was "in disbelief" when told his girlfriend was a figment of someone else's imagination.
