A number of graphics card manufacturers have already started to sell products based on the ATI Radeon HD 6990 graphics card with the cheapest being offered for as little as £530, which is just under twice the price of the cheapest Radeon HD 6970 card on the market.
Apart from the bragging rights of owning what is the fastest single graphics card on the planet, there's not much that the card, formerly known as Antilles, will offer. The card is made up of two Radeon HD 6970 GPU, with 3072 stream processors, 192 texture units and 64 ROps altogether.
Because of the sheer amount of heat generated, ATI has decreased the core clock and memory clock peed from 880MHz/1375GHz to 830MHz/1.25GHz. Everything else though is still doubled including the SRP, four Displayports, the amount of memory (to 4GB), the transistor count and the memory bus width.
Ebuyer has 17 cards altogether on preorder; the £530 Powercolor, £540 the Sapphire and the £550 XFX ones. Scan has the Sapphire, XFX and Asus models, Novatech has Asus and Sapphire on preorder, Aria also has the Sapphire model while Overclockers has the HIS and the Sapphire brands in stock.
Note that all of the cards - which come with two year warranty - stick to the reference model although overclocking should be possible in any case. Hardware site Anandtech reckons that it might be better to stick to a pair of 6950 in Crossfire or chose two 6970 which will be faster than the 6990 and quieter as well.
