Sony's power-packed NGP (next generation portable) hand-held gaming console might be launched in Europe this year, it has been revealed.
Sony has set development deadlines to ensure that NGP units for key Western markets are finished by the end of summer for an autumn release this year, sources have told MCV.
The report comes as several online sources are claiming that the device will be launched in the UK on Friday, November 11th. This is despite a top Sony executive saying that the company will be targeting at least one territory for an NGP launch during this year's holiday season.
SCEA head Jack Tretton said, “it's very difficult to have the quantities to be able to launch on a worldwide basis on the same date,” adding, “our goal is to get at least one territory out by the end of holiday 2011.” It is thought that would mean the device initially being launched in Japan followed by the rest of the world.
Sony NGP, which is also being hailed as the PlayStation Portable 2, is powered by quad-core processors, has a wide OLED touch screen and touch sensitive controls at the back. Sony's new console will give direct competition to Nintendo's upcoming 3DS hand-held device. The Nintendo 3DS is due for its UK release on the 25th of March.
