Apple has rejected an iOS game app which let users smuggle illegal immigrants across borders in a truck.
Upon rejection, Owlchemy Labs, the makers of the Smuggle Truck app were forced to change the name of the game to ‘Snuggle Truck’ and replace immigrants with wild animals. Snuggle Truck users are now required to smuggle wild animals to a zoo.
"Snuggle Truck will feature a group of cuddly creatures escaping the wilderness for the comfort of a zoo, where they're provided plenty of food, shelter, and state-of-the-art healthcare” the games description reads.
After they changed the name and the theme of the game, the app was approved by Apple and is retailing for $1.99 for the iPhone and $2.99 for the iPad. Meanwhile the Snuggle Truck app for Mac and Windows can be purchased for $5.
Owlchemy claims that the original was designed as a satire on the hardships faced by people immigrating into the US. The company says that it was careful not to include stereotypes and portray real locations where immigration takes place.
“Throughout the creation of the game, we maintained a meticulous eye to avoid depicting a specific stereotype or location, instead opting to generalize smuggling to its most basic abstract form” the developer said.
