Microsoft Brings Back Clippy In An Instructional Video Game

Microsoft has decided to bring the irritating Office assistant Clippy back from the dead in a new game designed to familiarise people with Office 2007 and Office 2010.

Clippy or Clippit was an animated clip that featured in previous versions of Microsoft Office as a virtual assistant that supposedly makes things simpler for the user. Far from being a help, Clippy turned into an irritating aspect of Microsoft Office that many customers and even Microsoft employees came to despise.

Smithsonian Magazine named Clippy “one of the worst software design blunders in the annals of computing,” Daily Tech reports. Microsoft later dismissed Clippy from Office much to users' relief.

Clippy's comeback in the game Ribbon Hero 2: Clippy’s Second Chance, is available for a free download and is compatible with both Microsoft Office 2007 and Office 2010.

“Ribbon Hero 2 follows Clippy (yes, he’s alive!) as he explores different time periods while trying to get back home. In each time period you get to explore a new game board with challenges to complete to get to the next level,” Microsoft’s Doug Thomas wrote in a blog post.

“Each challenge takes you into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote to complete a task. So you discover new Office features by actually using them (without actually working). Plus, there's a hint button to fall back on in case you get stuck."
