iPhone app could save fortune on data charges

Are you downloading too much and going over the monthly data cap on your iPhone? Well, there's an app for that.

The interesting Onavo app runs your downloads through its cloud, where they are compressed before hitting the money-grabbing networks that dreamed up data caps in the first place.

The end result is that going about your normal business online, such as browsing the web, checking email, and using Facebook or YouTube, will use less megabytes than it previously did. In fact, Onavo is promising that it can save you up to 85 per cent on data usage, which might allow many people to downgrade their data plans, or at the very least not go over their monthly limits. The oufit asked us to point out that the service isn't able to compress video or VoiP, just in case you were wondering.

The app will display the monthly usage for different online services, will tell you how much data you're saving, and will highlight the most saved app for that month. Best of all, Onavo is free.

The app is currently only available for Apple's iPhone, so Android fans will have to continue to pay through the nose for now until Onavo comes and saves them.
