According to a UK government official, ninety percent of UK will be covered by “superfast” broadband services by 2015.
Cultural Secretary Jeremy Hunt says that virtually everyone in the country will have 2 Mbps connections by 2015 and at least 90 percent of homes and businesses will be equipped with “superfast” connections yielding a speed of 25 Mbps or more during the same time frame.
“If we press ahead with expansion of superfast capabilities, then we can put the UK in the global fastlane,” Hunt said at a conference in London, The Telegraph reports.
The government also expressed its desire to make UK the leading European country in terms of superfast broadband networks within the next 4. It also claimed that the telecom market currently possesses the potential to cover almost two-third of the country on their own. However, the final third may need some assistance.
“We have set aside the money and the expertise to make this happen. Now local authorities need to step up to the plate by bringing forward their own plans and setting out how they will deliver this level of ambition,” the cultural secretary added.
