Apple's iPhone And App Store Awarded Guinness World Records

Apple’s iPhone 4 and App Store have been awarded records in the Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition.

The iPhone 4 was awarded the title of the fastest selling portable gaming device in the world, selling 1.5 million units on June 24, 2010, the first day of its launch. In comparison, the PSP sold 200,000 units on its launch date while the DS took a week to sell 500,000 units.

Apple’s App Store was named as the most popular application marketplace in the world, with more than 6.5 billion downloads since its July 2008 launch. The organisation said that the App Store had 259,470 apps as of September 2010.

"The release of the iPhone has not just changed the mobile industry, but the video game world too," says Gaz Deaves, Guinness World Records Gaming Editor, PadGadget (opens in new tab)reports.

"With the never-ending App Store selection and an intuitive device, Apple has created a gigantic new space for itself in the casual games genre that literally brings entertainment to users wherever they may be," he added.

Rovio’s Angry Birds was named the top App Store game, and Plants V/S Zombies was named as the fastest selling iPhone/iPod strategy game, selling 300,000 paid downloads in its first nine days on sale.
