Amazon launches Mac app download service

Amazon has quietly launched a Mac software download service to compete with Apple's very own Mac App Store.

More than 250 online offerings are split into separate software and video games areas with some prices undercutting Apple's.

Amazon is also flogging Microsoft Office for Mac as a download, a title which is conspicuous by its absence from the Mac App Store.

The on-line book-flogger is celebrating the launch, and attempting to entice customers away from the Apple store, with $5 discounts on 'selected games' as well as giving away cutesy airline management sim Airport Mania: First Flight for free.

Games on offer seem at first glance to be dominated by third-rate bargain bucketry but digging a little deeper unearths the likes of Dragon Age 2 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Amazon says any games purchased can be downloaded and installed an unlimited amount of times for personal use.

The service is USA only at time of writing and we've had no response from Amazon on the timeline for a wider UK or international launch, though we suspect it will be on the cards soon enough.
