Apple could be working on two iPad 3 models and another two iPhone 5 versions, sources say, relying on USB device files from iOS 5 firmware not yet released, TUAW (opens in new tab)reports.
Mentions of unreleased "iPad3,1" and "iPad3,2" as well as "iPhone4,1" and "iPhone4,2" are available in the iOS systems files, but references to a future iPod Touch 5 model are nowhere to be seen.
"iPhone4,1" and "iPhone4,2” actually refer to the next-generation iPhone, the so-called iPhone 5 which is practically the fourth-generation iPhone since the first generation unit was iPhone 3G.
Since iPod Touch 5 has been omitted in the iOS system file, Apple could simply save its energy and focus on a more important gadget for the September launch – the purported iPhone 5, the report suggests. This is a bit surprising taking into account the fact that the September period is usually the time frame when new iPod versions hit the stores.
However, one should bear in mind the fact that model registration does not automatically guarantee shipping.
Things should become clearer in the following months when more information will hopefully be available.
Production of Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone is expected to begin somewhere in July or August and the iPhone 5 should hit the market in September.
