Research Claims Only 4 Percent Smartphones Have Malware Protection

A new research claims that nineteen out of 20 Smartphone and tablet users in UK run their devices without installing any malware and virus protection utilities.

The research, carried out by the leading Internet research firm Juniper Research, highlighted that despite an exponentially growing security-threat to these devices, only 4 percent of the UK’s Smartphone and tablet users were protected by anti malware software.

The news, no doubt, is somewhat shocking. Especially if one goes as to consider the easy availability of third party software utilities built for protecting tablet and Smartphone users not from just viruses or other malicious threats, but also when, and if the devices are stolen, or simply lost.

“The increasing extent to which personal and corporate data is stored on mobile devices and the recognition of the need to protect it will create a $3.6 billion (£2.21 billion) opportunity for mobile security software providers by 2016,” the Juniper report claimed as cited by (opens in new tab).

“High-profile security alerts are likely to heighten the public’s awareness of this growing issue,” it added.

The report also claimed that the number of mobile devices, equipped with software protection utilities will rise up to 277 million by the end of 2016.
