Social media giant Facebook is all set to surpass Yahoo Inc. as the United State’s biggest internet display advertising market, a new study has revealed.
According to the study carried out by the market research firm Emarketer Inc., Mark Zuckerberg and his team is likely to pocket a hefty sum of $2.19 billion from display ad sales in 2011 alone - almost 17.7 percent of the market
The research has placed Yahoo at the second place with near about 13.1 percent of the total market.
“Facebook’s supreme popularity - both in terms of numbers of people and amount of time they spend there - creates a plethora of display ad impressions, mainly for its unique form of banners,’’ David Hallerman, an EMarketer analyst, said in the report.
“That popularity is also boosting what advertisers will pay,’’ he added.
The report also estimated search giant Google increasing its US display ad sales by almost one-third, thus making it to 9.3 percent of the market share only to be led by Facebook and Yahoo.
This, according to many, may bring some really tough challenges for both Facebook and Yahoo, as Google, being almost sort of an undisputed king in the search market, can also customize advertisements on the basis of what users are actually looking for online.
