A new digital map portraying the detailed structures of the British landscape has been issued by a group of scientists.
The map, which exhibits the incredible beauty of the landscape, will eventually help us update our knowledge regarding how people are utilizing their land, how they manage it, as well as its sustainability in the future and a lot of other things.
The map, dubbed the new UK Land Cover Map (LCM) is the end-result of several years of hard work by the researchers. It comprises of 70 satellite images collected in between 2005 and 2008.
The map exhibits how different habitats are spread all across the country in a very convincing and eye-catching way.
"At a time when our land surface is under increasing pressure, reliable information on land cover is essential. The demands that we place on our land are often conflicting and need to be balanced to maintain and enhance our quality of life,” Dr Dan Morton of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), said in a statement, Planet Earth reports (opens in new tab).
“To address these issues and plan for the future, we need to know what we have on our land surface and where it is,” he added.
Apparently Dr. Morton, who was the head of the project, believes that the new map will help to quite some extent in achieving that goal.
