AMD Launches New 6990M Mobile GPU

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc., has introduced the brand new HD 6990M - with the view of strengthening its hold over the mobile GPU (graphics processor unit) for notebooks market.

The company brags that the new offering is the fastest single mobile processor ever made, with a speed 25 percent faster than the other high-end notebook GPUs floating around in the market at present.

Not just that, the 6990M is also compatible with the CrossFireX technology, as well as, extends its support to dual Graphics with a combination of two or more Radeon GPUs, or one AMD APU and one Radeon GPU. The GPU also supports up to a maximum of six displays simultaneously.

“There’s always been a belief that when it comes to mobile computing you need to make performance compromises. Today AMD demolishes that myth,” Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, GPU division, AMD said in a statement, technology website Slashgear reports (opens in new tab).

“The AMD Radeon HD 6990M GPU, which not only packs AMD Eyefinity technology with unprecedented specs, also provides full Microsoft DirectX(R) 11 and Stereo 3D support. Bottom line, this processor is epic and it’s here — now,” Mr. Skynner added.
