The HTC Droid Incredible 2 smartphone, available in the US on Verizon, will soon receive a new update, v2.18.605.4, that will bring with it Android 2.3 Gingerbread along with a number of other under-the-hood improvements.
According to Verizon's support page (opens in new tab), the update will improve the performance of the mobile instant messaging, solve Hotmail sync and connect issues that happen when setting up one day sync, a new download management application, enhanced device stability, a brand new desktop app and more.
We're not sure whether it will actually be a bog standard Gingerbread update or the latest 2.3.4. The total size of the update will be 116MB and should be rolled out pretty soon.
Given the number of recent Gingerbread announcements we've heard, it appears that manufacturers and mobile network operators have finally come to realise that smartphones need to be upgraded as soon as new platform updates from Google are rolled out.
Not doing so could not only leave them lagging behind competitors but also they risk the wrath of Google as the company has promised to crack down on any partners that do not toe the line. Ultimately, Android roll outs should be as smooth, seamless and straightforward as on Apple's iOS platform.
