Apple’s iPad may be the most activated tablet computer in the world, but latest reports have revealed that Android-based tablet computers are eating into the market share of iPad.
According to Mobile Business Briefing, market share of Apple’s operating system for its iPad 1 and iPad 2 has gone down considerably for the second quarter of the current fiscal year when compared to the data for last year.
The report by research company Strategy Analytics has revealed that Apple Inc.’s OS for tablet computer that dominated the market with 94.3% share globally has fallen down to 61.3% in the second quarter of financial year 2011.
On the other hand Google’s Android Operating System for tablet computers has shown sharp rise in the number of units shipped during the second quarter along with its share in the global tablet market. Around 4.6 million Android-powered tablets were shipped in the given duration while only 100,000 units were recorded during the same time last year.
"If Amazon decides to enter the Android tablet category later this year, that will bring fresh excitement and buzz to the Android community, but Amazon will need to deliver a truly standout offering if it really wants to make headway against the popular iPad," Neil Mawston, the director at the research firm stated.
