Barcelona To Remain MWC Venue Until 2018, More Events Planned

The GSM Association has declared Barcelona the ‘Mobile World Capital’, announcing that it will continue to host the Mobile World Congress until 2018.

The city has been hosting the Mobile World Congress since 2006 and will be doing so till 2018, the GSM Association announced. It had earlier decided to expand the Mobile World Congress convention to hold mobile phone events all year long, PC World reports.

The association had to chose between Barcelona, Paris, Munich and Milan to decide the Mobile World Capital, to host the MWC and related events between 2013 and 2018.

The GSMA chose Barcelona for its "combination of outstanding exhibition and conference facilities, its transportation and hospitality infrastructure, its commitment to expanding the reach of mobility throughout Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain, and the strong support of the public and private sectors."

Having declared Barcelona the Mobile World Capital, the association plans to open a Mobile World Centre, which will include mobile phone technology exhibitions and stores and a Mobile World Festival which will hold tourist events centered around mobile phones throughout the year.

The GSMA also announced that the venue for the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona will be shifted to Fira de Barcelona Gran Via in 2013, from Fira Montjuic.
