Is Sony Ericsson quietly cutting the price of its Xperia Play? We're led to believe so after Expansys dropped the price of the Playstation Phone from £499.99 to only £289 after a £10 discount using the EXP10 voucher code.
How good is the deal? Pretty good actually, given that Three sells the phone on pay as you go for £500 and the Expansys model (available only in black, the white one costs £100 extra) is unlocked and unbranded.
Not only is there plenty of stock at Expansys but you get a free car charger when you buy the smartphone. Much has been written about the phone and we suspect that the drop in price could be down to the forthcoming launch of the Sony Playstation Vita in around two months' time.
The phone comes with a massive, physical, slide-out gaming pad, not unlike the one found on the Playstation Portable. It also has a 4-inch 854x480 pixel capacitive touchscreen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8655 SoC clocked at 1GHz with an Adreno 205 GPU (the same as the iPhone 4), a five-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and an array of features (smile shutter, image stabilisation, blink and face detection etc), FM Radio, 400MB onboard storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 720p video recording and a massive 1500mAh battery.
Arguably though, its unique selling point is the fact that it is the first certified Playstation phone on the market and comes with five games. In addition, Expansys sells the multimedia dock for the Xperia Play (which allows it to become a digital video player) for only £26.
