Nokia is gearing up for the launch of its first Windows Phone as details of a joint Microsoft and Nokia party has reached the newsroom in the form of an electronic invite.
The invite comes with the Windows Phone logo and points to the 17th of August as the date of the event. Interestingly, it will happen at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany and promises "exciting actions and surprises".
According to theunwired.net, the organisers promise they "will make it an an evening to remember"; even more intriguing is the fact that they will raffle three Nokia handsets with Windows Phone (which all but confirms the aim of the event).
Japanese telecommunications company KDDI was the first to launch a Windows Phone Mango smartphone, the Fujitsu Toshiba IS12T, a few days ago and others are likely to follow suit soon,
We're quizzical over the timing of the event though. Past experience has told us that Nokia and Games do not mix very well; indeed, the last venture by the Finnish company in this segment, with the N-Gage, proved to be a miserable failure.
That said, the fact that Xbox Live features prominently in Windows Phone could make it a compelling proposition and explain the choice of Gamescom for the mysterious event.
