Microsoft has detailed more abilities of the upcoming Windows Phone 7 ‘Mango’ update, specifically surrounding gaming on the new platform – months ahead of the OS arriving.
The Seattle based software company shed some light on these new details at the annual Gamescom gaming conference in Cologne, Germany this week.
These new features are the avatar awardables, which are just like achievements only wearable. Once unlocked, these items will automatically appear in the avatar closet on ‘Mango’ and can be worn on the avatar’s sleeve as a badge of honour. The ‘Chickens Can’t Fly’ forthcoming Xbox live release will be among the first titles to feature this ability.
There will also be game add-ons in the new platform. The Xbox live title ‘Beards & Beaks’ will offer up purchasable extra mushrooms and other items from within the game itself, by using Microsoft Points. More titles in the months ahead will have in-game add-ons and downloadable content, such as extra weapons or levels.
A next new addition is the parental controls for gaming, where the next release of Windows Phone 7 gives parents more control over what content their child can access on a WP7 device. These include M-rated (Mature) games - the first M-rated Windows Phone title is ‘Splinter Cell: Conviction’ and is scheduled to arrive in the Marketplace later this fall.
