Online retail giant Amazon has ramped up its social media efforts; the first step being formation of a new social media group and new hiring.
The company recently created a new position of director of social media, which has been filled by John Yurcisin. Yurcisin, who was poached from Ogilvy & Mather, is the brother of Amazon owned retail website Shopbop.com’s general manager, Jeff Yurcisin, Reuters (opens in new tab) reports.
The Kindle maker is also busy hiring developers and software engineers for its Social Games Group, with which the company hopes to take on social gaming giant Zynga. Amazon is particularly interested in software engineers and Flash developers.
The company has also posted a social games job on professional social networking platform LinkedIn. Amazon has failed to enter the social networking and social media foray until now, an industry largely dominated by Facebook and Zynga.
Another reason behind Amazon’s social media push is that the company is planning to launch its own Android based Kindle tablet/e-reader and preparing to build on Kindle’s popularity to offer games social games and other social networking service. Amazon also has an Android app store, which rivals Google’s Android market.
