MeeGo morphs into Tizen

Intel-supported OS flop Meego is to be folded into a new initiative, aimed a buidling an open-source, cross-platfrom OS now budded Tizen.

Intel said it has joined Linux Foundation and LiMo Foundation to develop Linux-based Tizen to build a "software platform for multiple device categories".

The standards-based Tizen project will be hosted at the Linux Foundation and offer an operating system and a standards-based HTML5 and WAC web development environment within which device-independent apps can be produced.

Intel said it will work with its MeeGo partners to help them transition to Tizen.

Morgan Gillis, Executive Director of LiMo Foundation called the move "a well-timed step change which unites major mobile Linux proponents within a renewed ecosystem with an open web vision of application development which will help device vendors to innovate through software and liberalize access to consumers for developers and service providers."

The initial release of Tizen is expected in Q1 2012, with the first devices in the market mid-2012.
