ARM Holding plc and United Microelectronics Corp, a leading global semiconductor foundry, in a formal announcement on 6th October, declared that they are entering into a long term agreement that will provide the customers of UMC foundry access to the ARM Artisan Physical IP solutions validated on UMC’s 28HPM process technology which is the latest advanced high performance process technology.
This new 28-nm technology covers wide range of applications including portable devices like mobile and wireless and high performance applications, like the digital home and high speed networking.
The two companies pointed out that, coming together will let them harness the strength of both the companies and result into delivery of superb high quality technology and wide support to mutual customers.
In a press release (opens in new tab), Simon Segars, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of ARM’s Physical IP division, said, “Extending the relationship between ARM and UMC will enable deeper collaboration and innovation in the development of process technology and advanced physical IP at 28-nm nodes.”
UMC declared that the 28HPM process technology is going for pilot production in mid-2012 as scheduled which features high-k metal gates and many options for device voltages, memory bit-cells, under-drive and overdrive capabilities so that the designers of SoC realise high performance along with extended battery life.
