RIM Blackberry users have been hit with a massive data outage that has cut them off email, web and instant message services for a few hours already.
The outage started just after 1015 BST according to tweets from concerned users and mobile phone operators, which prompted RIM to issue a statement saying: "We are working to resolve an issue currently impacting some BlackBerry subscribers in Europe, Middle East and Africa, We're investigating, and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused whilst this is resolved."
According to The Telegraph (opens in new tab), a data center that powers web-related services in the EMEA region could have been hit, but the company has yet to issue another statement to explain what went wrong and what it intends to do to prevent it from happening again.
Several Middle East mobile service providers including Du, Wataniya, Safari.com and Vodafone Egypt, have confirmed that services will be restored later in the day.
Some users have also confirmed via Twitter that services had started to come back shortly before 1700 on Monday. The snafu might have affected millions of users of Blackberry Internet Service which comprises BBM, Email and Web services.
