Android App Downloads Exceed That of iPhone

A new research has revealed that Android has emerged as the market leader in terms of mobile app downloads surpassing iOS despite the fact that iPhone is the bestselling smartphone till date.

According to the research carried out by ABIresearch, market share of Android app download is 44% whereas that of iOS was 31%. The market intelligence company claims that the reason behind the Android leading the mobile app download market share is its Open nature which in turn has resulted into a greater install base and hence greater number of app downloads.

Lim Shiyang, research associate said, "Android's open source strategy is the main factor for its success." He adds, "Being a free platform has expanded the Android device install base, which in turn has driven growth in the number of third party multi-platform and mobile operator app stores."

There was a substantial increase in the number of Android handsets that were shipped in Q2 2011 compared to that of iPhones. This definitely adds to the increase in downloads of app.

With the increase in shipments of Android as well as iOS devices, both Apple and Google are set to benefit immensely as it is predicted that compared to previous year there will be an increase of 9 billion downloads.
