Google Backed Research Team Maps Geothermal Energy Below the US

A Google funded research team has discovered that there is a vast potential for utilising geothermal energy in the United States.

According to Forbes (opens in new tab), the researchers at Southern Methodist University have discovered that the United States has massive potential of producing electricity using geothermal energy.

Geothermal energy is the natural heat that comes from inside the earth and can be harnessed to produce electricity.

The Google funded research found that the geothermal energy beneath the United States is capable of producing 3 million megawatts of energy, which is ten times more than what the active coal-based power plants in the US produce.

The researchers have produced a map which shows the geothermal energy beneath the earth and areas which can be benefited by it.

"Once again, SMU continues its pioneering work in demonstrating the tremendous potential of geothermal resources," said Karl Gawell, executive director of the Geothermal Energy Association.

"Both Google and the SMU researchers are fundamentally changing the way we look at how we can use the heat of the Earth to meet our energy needs, and by doing so are making significant contributions to enhancing our national security and environmental quality." he added.
