Former YouView chief technology officer Anthony Rose has launched a new TV viewing service for Apple's iPad device.
The ZeeBox is available in the UK from the iTunes App Store. The service allows users view TV programming and doubles up as a remote control for the TV.
The main selling point of the app is that it makes TV viewing more social for users. ZeeBox allows users to see what their friends are watching and chat with them between programs. The app will also let users share what they are watching on social networking platforms and even make updates on Twitter, according to a report (opens in new tab) by DigitaltvEurope.
With ZeeBox, users also get a high tech remote control. The app supports the latest range of connected TV devices from manufacturers like Sony and Samsung. Users simply connect their TV to the web and activate the app on Wi-Fi.
The ZeeBox team is already working on enhancing the iPad app and also plans to launch an app for the iPhone by the end of this year.
"Zeebox is a complex product because it spans multiple disciplines - broadcast TV ingest, natural language processing, video and audio fingerprinting, social, product and user experience design, TV schedules and metadata, huge traffic spikes, real-time presence and chat service, and more," reads the ZeeBox website.
