Activision's latest first person shooter game, Modern Warfare 3, has managed to break the record for the biggest entertainment launch in history.
According to The Guardian (opens in new tab), the game publisher claimed that in the US and UK alone, the game had sold 6.5 million units within 24 hours, raking in $400 million in sales.
The game broke the record held by Call of Duty Black Ops which sold 5.6 million units in 24 hours and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 which sold 4.7 million units in the first launch.
Apart from breaking gaming records, the game has also had the biggest entertainment launch, beating Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part 2, which made $80 million in its first day, by a considerable margin.
"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories," said Activision Blizzard chief executive Bobby Kotick.
"Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time", he added.
