Xbox Turns 10, Microsoft Says “Thank you for the first ten years”

It has been 10 years since Microsoft unveiled the Xbox, a revolutionary product in gaming market.

In the very first week of its launch 100,000 units were shipped to the retailers and before the end of 2001, 1.5 million units of this gaming console were sold. These very impressive figures made the Xbox "bestselling video game console" during the time.

At present the Microsoft Xbox brand has quite fascinating additions and versions, for example Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE and also the Xbox Kinect for 360. In a message on Xbox.com (opens in new tab), Microsoft states, "Ten years ago, we launched the first Xbox console. Since then, we've launched Xbox LIVE, Xbox 360, Xbox 360 S, Kinect, and lots more. We couldn't do this without you! Thank you for the first ten years and more to come!"

Categorically, at present Xbox LIVE has 35 million members all over the world spending 2.1 billion hours every month on its services. After selling 8 million units in two months, the Kinect for 360 became the Guinness World Record holder for highest selling consumer electronic device, reported Tweaktown.com (opens in new tab).

Initially, when the console was launched games like Halo and Project Gotham Racing took the world by storm and became very popular among gamers.

At the time of its launch it was priced at $299.99 and made it to the market while three other consoles were already in the market - Sony's PlayStation, Nintendo's GameCube and Sega's DreamCast. Out of all three, Xbox proved to be the most powerful gaming console which is still enjoying huge popularity all over the world.
