WordPress Unveils v3.3 Sonny

The world's most popular blogging platform and content management system, WordPress, has received yet another major update called Sonny (in honor of Jazz legend Sonny Stitt) which brings it to v3.3.

In a post on the Wordpress.org official blog, frontman Matt Mullenweg revealed that more than 65 million WordPress 3 downloads have been logged and that the third major update since then brings a number of important features.

These include Drag and Drop uploader, hover menus for navigation, better support for co-editing, an updated tool bar, better tablet support and a new import feature for Tumblr users.

WordPress also addresses the needs of new users with pointer tips, new welcome message and help tabs.

For developers and partners, version 3.3 introduces a new editor API, a new jQuery version, better ways to link to help screens, better performing post-slug-only permalinks and a few more surprises.

The first WP 3.3 Beta 1 was released in October 2011 quickly followed by three other beta releases and three release candidate releases. Automattic - which handles Wordpress.com struck a deal with Federated Media in October and announced that it is powering more than 50 million blogs.
