Mobile retail giant The Carphone Warehouse has announced that it plans to sell Sony's wedge-shaped Tablet S devices from Thursday in an attempt to capitalise on the Christmas gadget trade.
Tablet S, the more traditional tablet in Sony's line-up and partner to the clamshell dual-screen Tablet P, has been available from Sony directly in Wi-Fi only models for a while, but The Carphone Warehouse has confirmed plans to make both the Wi-Fi and 3G models available from Thursday.
Powered by a 1GHz ARM-based processor and featuring a 9.4-inch LED-backlit high-definition display in an innovative wedge-shaped body designed to make the tablet easier to hold, most models feature Android 3.1 'Gingerbread' with a promised upgrade to Android 3.2 in the works. The 3G model, however, will ship with Android 3.2 as standard, the company has confirmed.
The entry model, a Wi-Fi only version with 16GB of internal storage, is set to cost £349, while a 32GB version will be available for £429. For those looking for a model with in-built mobile broadband, a 16GB model with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity will be available for £450.
Perhaps the key feature of Sony's tablet offerings is the PlayStation certification, promising compatibility with Android-based PlayStation-branded games and support to act as a remote for the company's range of TVs, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems.
Sadly, Sony has yet to confirm when or if it plans to make an upgrade to Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' available for its tablet line.
